What Is Oral Pathology?
Oral pathology focuses on diagnosing and treating diseases that affect the mouth, including serious conditions such as oral cancer. The inside of the mouth is typically lined with smooth, coral-pink mucosa, and any changes in its appearance — such as reddish or whitish patches, nonhealing sores, lumps, or difficulty swallowing — can be warning signs of a pathological process. At Koslin & Kahn Oral & Facial Surgery, we monitor and treat conditions affecting the lips, cheeks, gums, palate, and other areas of the mouth and neck. Regular oral cancer self-exams are recommended, and if you notice any concerning changes, we encourage you to contact us at any of our Hoover, Jasper, or Clanton, AL locations for further evaluation and biopsies if necessary.
How Does Oral Pathology Work?
Oral pathology works by identifying and diagnosing diseases in the mouth through careful examination and diagnostic tests, including screening for mouth cancer. When a patient presents symptoms such as unexplained sores, lumps, or persistent changes in the mouth's appearance, an oral and maxillofacial pathology specialist will conduct a thorough evaluation. This often involves biopsies to analyze tissue samples for signs of malignancy or other pathological conditions. At Koslin & Kahn Oral & Facial Surgery, we prioritize early detection through routine screenings and provide expert care for conditions affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions, offering treatments tailored to each patient's needs.

Koslin & Kahn Oral & Facial Surgery Reviews
Great experience all around from the front office to the surgeon & his staff. Pleasant conversation, professional, kind & funny even while extracting my tooth. Highly recommend Dr. Bannon & his staff.
Great service….as always!!
I came in with severe pain and the staff was so nice and understanding. I am terrified of dentists but not with them. I did have to have a tooth extracted and for once I was not scared of the procedure and even during the procedure. They were able to do it quickly on the same day and kept me feeling comfortable. Would give more than 5 stars if I could!
Dr. Denson was great! He went out of his way to accommodate me on short notice, explained the procedure thoroughly, and answered all my questions patiently. The procedure was much quicker and easier than I had anticipated. I was in and out in about 35 minutes. No problems since. I couldn't have asked for a better experience.
Dr. Denson was great very patient and willing to explain everything every step of the process

Am I a Candidate for Oral Pathology?
Evaluation for oral pathology may be recommended for patients who notice unusual changes in the mouth, such as persistent sores, tissue irregularities, or unexplained swelling. Our team examines these areas closely and uses diagnostic tools to determine whether additional testing or treatment is needed. Early assessment is important for identifying concerns while they are most manageable. Having the following may mean you are a good candidate for oral pathology screening, though anyone can benefit from an evaluation on their oral health:
- Good general health
- Visible tissue changes
- Persistent oral lesions
- Unexplained swelling areas
- Stable systemic history
Some findings may require biopsy or referral depending on complexity. We will guide you through each step with clarity and care. Again, our team will thoroughly assess your unique situation to determine whether oral pathology evaluation is recommended.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are all oral lumps cancerous?
Not all oral lumps are cancerous. In fact, many oral lumps are benign, such as fibromas or cysts, but should still be evaluated by a professional.
Is oral pathology only for cancer?
Oral pathology refers to more than oral cancer. It also includes infections, traumatic injuries, cysts, developmental abnormalities, and non-cancerous growths.
What happens after a positive biopsy result?
After a positive biopsy result, your dentist or oral surgeon will explain the diagnosis in detail and discuss the next steps based on the findings. Treatment may include surgical removal of the lesion, additional testing, or referral to a specialist such as an oncologist if the results indicate cancer.
