What Are Impacted Teeth?
Impacted teeth occur when a tooth is unable to fully emerge from the gum line due to obstruction or insufficient space in the jaw. While it's most common in wisdom teeth, it can affect other teeth as well. Impacted teeth can lead to pain, infection, and alignment issues, making them a common reason for dental intervention. At Koslin & Kahn Oral & Facial Surgery, we provide high-quality care to address impacted teeth, offering solutions tailored to your needs. To learn more about impacted tooth removal, contact one of our offices in Hoover, Jasper, or Clanton, AL. Our team is committed to helping you restore your oral health and comfort.
How Are Impacted Teeth Treated?
Impacted teeth are typically treated through surgical extraction, which an oral surgeon performs to remove the tooth and alleviate any related issues such as pain, infection, or misalignment. Depending on the severity and location of the impacted tooth, the procedure may involve making a small incision in the gum to access the tooth, and in some cases, the tooth may be sectioned into smaller pieces for easier removal. After extraction, the area may be sutured to ensure proper healing. In certain situations, additional treatments like bone grafting or orthodontics may be recommended to ensure optimal oral health and function.
What Are the Benefits of Impacted Tooth Removal?
Removing impacted teeth offers several benefits, including:
- Alleviates pain and discomfort caused by impacted teeth
- Prevents infection and damage to surrounding teeth
- Improves oral hygiene by reducing overcrowding
- Prevents potential cysts or tumors from developing
- Restores alignment and function of the teeth
- Reduces the risk of gum disease or tooth decay
Koslin & Kahn Oral & Facial Surgery Reviews
Great experience all around from the front office to the surgeon & his staff. Pleasant conversation, professional, kind & funny even while extracting my tooth. Highly recommend Dr. Bannon & his staff.
Great service….as always!!
I came in with severe pain and the staff was so nice and understanding. I am terrified of dentists but not with them. I did have to have a tooth extracted and for once I was not scared of the procedure and even during the procedure. They were able to do it quickly on the same day and kept me feeling comfortable. Would give more than 5 stars if I could!
Dr. Denson was great! He went out of his way to accommodate me on short notice, explained the procedure thoroughly, and answered all my questions patiently. The procedure was much quicker and easier than I had anticipated. I was in and out in about 35 minutes. No problems since. I couldn't have asked for a better experience.
Dr. Denson was great very patient and willing to explain everything every step of the process

During this appointment, we will perform a comprehensive oral examination and take advanced imaging. Based on these findings, we will discuss whether extraction is the best course of action for your long-term oral health.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the risks of leaving an impacted tooth untreated?
If left untreated, impacted teeth can cause infections, gum disease, or cysts in the jawbone. They may also exert pressure on nearby teeth, leading to alignment issues or damage to the adjacent teeth. Treating impacted teeth promptly helps prevent these complications and maintains your oral health.
Is impacted tooth removal painful?
The removal process is performed under local anesthesia, sedation, or general anesthesia to ensure you don’t feel pain during the procedure. After surgery in Hoover, Jasper, or Clanston, AL, mild discomfort and swelling are normal but can be managed with prescribed pain medications and proper aftercare. Most patients recover within a few days to a week.
Is surgery always required for impacted teeth?
Not all impacted teeth require surgery. If the tooth isn’t causing pain, infection, or alignment issues, our team members at Koslin & Kahn Oral & Facial Surgery may recommend monitoring it closely. However, surgical removal is usually advised when complications are present or likely to occur in the future.
